Lenzerhiede Mountain Biking

Wow! That was nothing like what I expected. I anticipated a leisurely biking experience, perhaps navigating some tricky spots, but damn, was I mistaken. It turned out to be quite risky!

The evening prior, we arrived in Lenzerheide with plans for a day of hiking. However, our intentions swiftly changed upon realizing our surroundings. Originally aiming to venture further south into Graubünden, we altered our course due to unfavorable weather conditions. Settling into a campground near the village, we took cover from the rain, only to awaken to clear blue skies the next morning.

Making our way to the main gondola station to access Rothorn, we rented bikes and helmets, for a day filled with mountain biking in the Swiss Alps! A note to self for future reference, or for anyone contemplating a similar adventure: wear long pants. It lessens the impact of falls and helps avoid small scrapes. Seeking advice from the helpful staff at the rental shop, we requested recommendations for beginner-friendly trails, mindful of our limited mountain biking experience, having previously only explored the gentle slopes of Canada's East Coast.

Armed with suggestions, we set off. Lenzerheide's mountain biking trails are renowned for their diversity, catering to riders of all skill levels. For beginners, there are gentle flow trails and scenic routes that provide a perfect introduction to mountain biking. Intermediate riders will find a plethora of trails that offer a bit more challenge, with sections of technical terrain and steeper descents. And for advanced riders seeking an adrenaline rush, Lenzerheide offers expert-level trails with steep descents, technical rock gardens, and challenging obstacles.

One of the most popular trails in Lenzerheide is the Rothorn Trail, which starts at the summit of Rothorn and descends over 1,000 meters to the valley floor. This trail offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and provides a thrilling descent with plenty of technical features and challenging terrain.

Ascending via chairlift on the opposite side of the valley, we reached Piz Scalottas and take off on our journey. The very first turn... proved eventful as I tumbled into the bushes, offering a foretaste of the challenges ahead. Despite numerous falls, I refused to concede defeat, but after a particularly nasty spill, I conceded that perhaps this endeavor wasn't suited for me – a rarity for someone who typically perseveres relentlessly.

Descending cautiously, we paused for lunch at our car, contemplating throwing in the towel. However, instead of giving up, I opted to enhance my protective gear, feeling somewhat reassured by the additional safety measures. Transitioning to the flow lines from Scharmoin, we braved a few more exhilarating yet painful runs before daring to ascend towards Rothorn.

Observing others biking down from Rothorn, we anticipated a challenge, and we were not mistaken. Negotiating rocky terrain and grueling switchbacks, we found ourselves often dismounting and resorting to running alongside our bikes. With the added pressure of the rental shop's closing time looming over us, we navigated the descent with a sense of urgency, reminiscent of those infamous last-minute shoppers.

Finally, returning our gear and sighing with relief, we retired to the terrace, nursing our wounds with a well-deserved drink. Would I attempt this again? Honestly, yes. But next time, I'll be better prepared, acquaint myself with the terrain, proceed more cautiously, opt for easier trails, and, most importantly, don protective gear from the beginning.
