La Fouly

La Fouly unfolded like a spontaneous playlist shuffle rather than a meticulously planned adventure. Cruising in our Volvo, we ventured west, discovering this hidden gem where the mountains flirt with France and Italy. My heart just knew – this place was different.

Three hours on the road, the last half-hour winding up dark mountain roads, serenaded by Zach Bryan's "Revival." Camping des Glacier welcomed us in pitch black, surrounded by the mystery of towering mountains. This wild campsite, nestled among trees and streams, kept its secrets until the morning light.

With temperatures hitting -5, we bundled up, had a laid-back dinner under the stars, sipped some wine, and called it a night. Cold was on the agenda, and we were geared up for it as it dipped below zero. Waking up way too early, the first sight was a surprise - our rooftop tent covered in a delicate frost.

The view? A masterpiece – glaciers, streams, trees, and a tiny town with those classic Swiss chalets. It felt like stepping into a fairy tale, as it often does in Switzerland.

While waiting for the boys to roll out of their sleeping bags, I snagged coffee from the local joint, and we kicked off the day under the Glacier de L’A Neuve. A casual game of volleyball set the vibe before we headed towards Le Lacs de Fenêtre. Late fall meant a sprinkle of snow and some slippery spots, but with the right kicks, it was an adventure worth every step. The views, both on the way up and at the lake, were breathtaking. Lunch was a chill affair under a cross, soaking in the lake view and the mountains across the valley.

A sweet bonus of the hike? Constant glimpses into the mountains of France and Italy, thanks to La Fouly's geography. And if you're in the know about the region, yep, you guessed it – the legendary Mont Blanc, standing tall at 4,810 meters (15,781 feet), was our companion throughout the day. As we strolled back down, it gracefully bowed out of sight, and we gave it a "catch you later."

La Fouly carved a cozy spot in my heart. The laid-back vibe of being immersed in this jaw-dropping landscape, surrounded by nature, just hits you in the soul. Already counting down to the next time we visit this beautiful area, perhaps in the summer season where we can get a little more elevation and stroll into Italy or France.
